Update: note that I have not tested the procedure below with any of the PHP 5.3 versions, only with 5.2.5, which was the latest version at the time I originally wrote this.

PHP scripts often contain sensitive information: Think of CMS configurations where reading or running another user's script usually means gaining privileges to the CMS database. For example, select the package labelled 'PHP 5.2.5 zip package' if 5.2.5 is the current version. So i dont suggest to add other realease to your apt sources. But mixing repos from two different realeases may become painful. It is a dedicated server but the hosting company has said they tested it and dont provide support for third party scripting.
You can also then change the php extensions that are loaded. php 5.2.4 mail only sends to email addresses in same domain, not other email addresses. So first solution is to use those links and make Karmic -> Hardy. To use a different version of PHP (php 5.3 php 5.4 or php 5.5 ) simply log into your control panel, then in here click on 'Select PHP Version', then in the drop down selector choose the version of PHP you would like to use, then click on 'Set as current'. In these scenarios, the default Zend OpCache behavior defeats script file permissions by sharing a single SHM cache among all child PHP processes. Even when there is no Karmic repos available, you could use older ones from 8.04. Many common shared-hosting configurations change EUID in child processes to enforce privilege separation among hosted users (for example using mod_ruid2 for the Apache HTTP Server, or php-fpm user settings). Cache keys vary depending on configuration, but filename is a central key component, and compiled opcode can generally be run if a script's filename is known or can be guessed.

A Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerabilty exists in LimeSurvey 5.2.4 via the upload and install plugins function. Child PHP processes inherit the SHM descriptor, using it to cache and retrieve compiled script bytecode ("opcode" in PHP jargon). php php 5.2.4 vulnerabilities and exploits. In PHP SAPIs where PHP interpreters share a common parent process, Zend OpCache creates a shared memory object owned by the common parent during initialization.
The vulnerability details are as follows. With 5.x after 5.6.28 or 7.x after 7.0.13, the issue is resolved in a non-default configuration with the opcache.validate_permission=1 setting. An issue was discovered in PHP 5.x and 7.x, when the configuration uses apache2handler/mod_php or php-fpm with OpCache enabled.
